Access Medical Language Lab

To access Medical Language Lab content, you will always begin by logging into your LMS (ex: Blackboard, Canvas, D2L/Brightspace, Moodle) and accessing your LMS course. You should not be accessing your class on any fadavis.com website.

1. Log in to your LMS from your institution's login page with your username or school email address and password.

2. Once logged in, navigate to your course Homepage.

3. From the course homepage, locate your Assignments and find a link to launch Medical Language Lab content.

The images used here are samples - your actual course and assignment links may have different titles depending on how your instructor has designed them. Look for "Medical Language Lab" in the title, or chapter titles like "Medical Word Building" or "Body Structure" as examples of Medical Language Lab Chapter Assignment titles. Once you've found a link to Medical Language Lab content, click that link.

5. If this is your first time accessing your Medical Language Lab content for this course, you may be prompted to enter an Access Code. If you have purchased a print copy, the Access Code can be found on the inside cover of your book. Enter the Access Code on the left side of the landing page shown below and click REDEEM CODE.

If you do not have an access code, you may purchase Instant Access by clicking the BUY NOW button on the right side of the screen. Note that you may purchase Instant Access or Print. Proceed through the checkout and remember to enter your Discount Code if you have one. Once purchased, close the checkout window and proceed to your LMS course.

6. Once your access has been verified, you will be able to click links to Medical Language Lab content directly from your LMS course and can begin working on Medical Language Lab Assignments in the new window. You will not need to enter your Access Code again.

The Dashboard displays your current and upcoming assignments, as well as information on your overall performance compared to your classmates, and a discussion board.

To access your Assignments, click the View button next to your class.

To begin working on an assignment, first select the Details button. Then click on the Start button to begin your next activity.

The What’s Next panel will display up to three assignments at a time, based on due date. To see a full list of your assignments, select View Assignments.

The Assignments tab helps you track due dates and assignment completion.

View Topic Details

Clicking Details on an assignment will drill down to reveal your progress on each of the module’s sections or individual activities. The order of modules displayed here is the order in which you will proceed through the course when you start or continue an assignment.

Topics that you have already finished will be marked with 100% completion. To go back and practice a previously completed module, select the Review button.

Tollgate Approach (Select Users)

If your instructor has designated the Tollgate approach for your class, you may notice an active assignment with the Start button deactivated. The Tollgate approach means that an assignment will not open until the assignment before it is completed. You must complete the first assignment to unlock the next one, and so on.

Complete Assignments

Lessons contain five types of Exercises…Critical Listening, Response, Generation, Practice, and Review. To access an Exercise, click the Exercise link to begin working.

Don’t forget to review the Due Date for each Exercise. Work submitted after the due date will not be recorded in your Instructor’s Gradebook, unless they have opted to accept late submissions (see Late Submissions section).

After completing each Exercise, check the Exercise Status and Grade fields to confirm that your work has been submitted.

Exercise Types

Critical Listening

Listen to the Audio Recording to familiarize yourself with the content. Then, click the Continue to Questions button to answer the questions associated with the audio. After submitting, you will be able to review your results, replay the audio, view a transcript, or try again.

Multiple-choice questions will follow, based upon the audio prompt.

Response

Response Exercises are also based upon an audio prompt. Some Response Exercises, however, will require you to record your own voice as the submission. Listen to the Audio Recording (1) to familiarize yourself with the content. Then, click the Continue to Questions button (2) to answer the questions associated with the audio.

In the case of a Pronunciation Exercise, click the Record button and then read the statement precisely as written.

You will be scored automatically based upon how well you pronounce the statement. You can review your answer by clicking he Preview button. If you wish, you may re-record your answer, which will overwrite the original recording.

Once you are satisfied with your recording, click Submit. After submitting, you will be able to review your results, replay the audio, view a transcript, or try again. You will need either an internal or external microphone to complete these exercises. If you are asked to grant the system access, click Allow.

Generation

Generation Exercises are subjective and not graded by the system. Instead, they are are graded by your instructor. There are two types of Generation Exercises: Audio and Text.

Audio Generation

These exercises ask you to record yourself saying a sentence or two using the appropriate medical terminology. You will need either an internal or external microphone to complete these exercises. If you are asked to grant the system access, click Allow.

Then, click the Record https://medicallanguagelab.fadavis.com/Content/images/recordIcon.png button (1). When finished speaking, click the https://medicallanguagelab.fadavis.com/Content/images/stopIcon.png button to stop recording.

Click Preview (2) to play back your recording, and submit (2) once completed. Or, to start over, click Reset.

Note: Smartphones generally do not support MLL’s Audio Generation activities. Please also avoid using Internet Explorer. Desktop and laptop computers with Mac OS or Windows 7,8,10 are generally supported, with Google Chrome being the recommended browser. Chromebooks are supported. iPads may be supported with the latest versions of iOS.

When recording your responses, note the visual cue below. If the sound waves are not appearing on your screen, your audio is not being captured and you may try a different device.

Text Generation

You are asked to write a sentence or two using medical terminology. Type in your answer and then click Submit.

Remember that Generation Exercises are not graded automatically, so you will not see a grade in your Gradebook for these exercises until your instructor has evaluated your submission and assigned a grade.

Practice

Practice activities are a collection of alternative exercises that allow for types of learning outside of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Some may be reported to the Gradebook, while others are not (such as Flash Cards, Crossword).

Review Assignments

Review Assignments contains the Module Test for each module, which is a comprehensive, ten question multiple-choice test.
