Start, Continue, and Review Your Assignments

Each assignment module in Medical Language Lab contains multiple exercises sorted into activity types. The activity types and exercises within each module can be customized by your instructor and may vary depending on which textbook you're assigned. You will potentially see the following activity types: Read, Watch, Critical Listening, Response, Generation, Pronounce, Practice, and Review.

Don’t forget to review the due date for each exercise. Work submitted after the due date will not be recorded in your instructor’s Gradebook, unless your instructor opts to accept late submissions (see our "Grading and Feedback" article).

After completing each exercise, check the exercise's status to confirm that your work has been submitted.

When you've submitted an attempt for an exercise, click its "Review" button to see your results for that exercise.

Exercise Types

You must launch each MLL assignment directly via links in your LMS course, for your grades to record successfully.

The activity types and exercises within each module can be customized by your instructor and may vary depending on which textbook you're assigned. Critical Listening Exercises

Critical Listening exercises begin with an audio recording. Listen to a Critical Listening exercise's audio recording (1) to familiarize yourself with its content, then click the "Continue to Questions" button (2).

After you click "Continue to Question(s)," multiple-choice questions will follow, based upon the audio recording.

After submitting your attempt at a Critical Listening exercise, you will be able to review your results, replay the exercise's audio, and view its transcript.

Response Exercises

Similar to Critical Listening exercises, Response exercises are based upon an audio recording prompt. Some Response exercises, however, will require you to record your own voice to submit as a response.

Listen to the audio recording (1) to familiarize yourself with its content, then click the "Continue to Questions" button (2) to answer the questions associated with the audio recording.

To complete Response exercise questions which require you to submit your own voice, you will need an internal or external microphone to record your responses. If asked, please grant the system access to your microphone.

Click the Record button (1), then read the statement (2) precisely as written. You'll be able to review your recorded answer by clicking the "Preview" button (3), and can re-record your answer by clicking the Record button again.

Once you are satisfied with your recording, click "Submit" (4).

You'll be scored automatically based on how well you pronounced the statement in-question. After submitting your answers to complete a Response exercise, you will be able to review your results, replay the exercise's audio recordings, and view a transcript of the exercise's initial audio recording prompt.

Generation Exercises

Generation exercises are graded by your instructor, and are comprised of two types: Audio and Text.

Audio Generation exercises ask you to record yourself saying a sentence or two using appropriate medical terminology. You will need either an internal or external microphone to complete these exercises, and will need to grant the system access to your microphone if asked.

Click the Record https://medicallanguagelab.fadavis.com/Content/images/recordIcon.png button (1). When finished speaking, click the https://medicallanguagelab.fadavis.com/Content/images/stopIcon.png button to stop recording. To erase your current recording so you can record another, click "Reset."

Click Preview (2) to play back your recording, then Submit (3) once you're satisfied with your recording.

Smartphones generally do not support MLL’s Audio Generation exercises. Additionally, please also avoid using Internet Explorer when completing Audio Generation exercises.

Desktop and laptop computers with Mac OS or Windows 7, 8, and 10 are generally supported, with Google Chrome being the recommended browser. Chromebooks are supported, and iPads may be supported if they've been updated with the latest versions of iOS.

When recording your responses, observe whether sound waves are appearing on your screen, in the visual cue seen below. If your audio is not being captured, that sound wave cue won't appear, and you may need to use a different device to complete the Audio Generation exercise at-hand.

When completing a Text Generation Exercise, you are asked to write a sentence or two using medical terminology. Type in your answer and then click "Submit."

Remember that Generation exercises are not graded automatically, so you will not see a grade in your Gradebook for these exercises until your instructor has evaluated your submission and assigned a grade. Likewise, your grade on your LMS, for the module which contained the Generation exercise you completed, won't be updated until your instructor assigns your Generation exercise attempt a grade.

Pronounce Exercises

Pronounce exercises will prompt you to practice the pronunciation of medical terms. Select the microphone icon to record.

After submitting your answers for a Pronounce exercise, you will be able to review your results and phonetic feedback.

Practice Exercises

Practice exercises are diversified to appeal to a wide variety of learning types.

Your performance on most Practice exercise types will be reported to your Gradebook. But, some Practice exercise types, most notably Flash Cards and Crossword exercises, will not report your performance to your Gradebook.

Review Exercises

Your Review activity type within each respective MLL Module contains a comprehensive, multiple-choice Module Test.

Once you complete a Module Test, you will be offered up to three optional remediation opportunities based upon your performance.

PreTest and PostTest Exercises

Your instructor may choose to assign a PreTest and/or PostTest. These tests are meant to give you, respectively, a comprehensive primer of the MLL content you'll encounter during your class, or a comprehensive review of the MLL content you covered during your class.

If your instructor chooses so, your PreTest will generate a Study Plan highlighting the strengths and weaknesses dictated by your PreTest results. Consult your PreTest Study Plan to consider which content areas might most require your attention, as you encounter them throughout your class.
